Herbs from our herb garden

Our Sonia-Follows-created herb garden is flourishing!  Take advantage, borrow a pair of scissors and cut yourself the bunch you need – for 50p.

Borrow bags!

The shop’s guiding principle is “reduce reuse recycle” so we are very reluctant to offer our customers NEW plastic bags.  Customers often bring us USED plastic bags, but sometimes we run out.  We don’t want to be unhelpful to that lovely customer who has just done a big shop but forgotten their bag – so we now also have some “borrow bags” – bags made of leftover material which customers can borrow for the day and return the next time they come in.   Or strong paper shopping bags for 15 p each.

Two new local cheeses

These two cheeses come to us from Manor Lodge, Litton, Radstock:  A fresh ewes cheese which comes in 150 g pots.  Ewes cheeses even form part of some non-dairy diets.  And Old Demdike – which comes in 400g rounds.

BBQ Charcoal from our very own woods

This charcoal – for sale in the shop – comes from Stoke Wood just over the A36 where Karen and Adam of the Heartwood Project are ‘reviving the pulse of the woodland culture’ with the help of a grant from the Cotswold Sustainable Development Fund.  They run occasional courses in charcoal making and greenwood work and hope to offer activities and exploration days for children and young people.  See their interesting website.

Strawberries – and jam jars

Strawberries are very early this year.  Will you be making jam?  We had lots of jam jars at the shop but they’ve all gone.  If you have any, do bring them to us!  And if you need some, please  email us and we will contact you when we have more.

Reading specs

Frustrated when you can’t find your one pair of reading glasses?  Have several pairs -  strategicall placed around the house and your handbag!  We now stock a selection of inexpensive attractive pairs of reading specs at the most common magnifications – some very brightly coloured!  But not all …

Dorset Down Mushrooms

Our mushrooms – large Portabella mushrooms and small closed-cup ones – come from Dorset Down Mushrooms – a small family business near Sherborne, run by George and Nicola Pointing.  We discovered them at the Bath Farmers Market and persuaded George to do a little detour on their way to Bath very early on a Saturday to do a delivery to us.

Therefore, the mushrooms are freshest – straight from their mushroom fields – on a Saturday!  They do last until the following Friday thanks to our new chillers but if you want them at their best, Saturday or Sunday morning are the times to come.

At Bath Farmers Market George always has some cooked mushrooms to taste – cooked on site in just a little butter – and they are delicious.  He has also given us some very nice mushroom recipes – available from the shop and – perhaps soon – downloadable from this website.
